President Joe Biden delivered a series of stark warnings about what a second Donald Trump term could hold during a star-studded Los Angeles fundraiser Saturday evening, framing the 2024 presidential election as an inflection point in American history. “Institutions matter,” the president said. “What (Trump) did on January 6, and now he’s literally saying if he doesn’t win there’ll be a bloodbath — it’s outrageous. What he’s talking about is outrageous.” The fundraiser, which featured former President Barack Obama, raised more than $30 million for Biden’s reelection efforts, a campaign official told CNN. The conversation between Biden and Obama was moderated by television host Jimmy Kimmel. Biden specifically argued on Saturday evening that the next four years could see openings on the Supreme Court, potentially leading to the appointment of more conservative justices if Trump is reelected. “...

What are bump stocks? US Supreme Court lifts Trump-era ban on gun attachments

Image
What are Bump Stocks? Bump stocks are devices that can be attached to semi-automatic rifles, enabling them to fire at rates similar to fully automatic weapons. By harnessing the gun’s recoil, bump stocks allow the rifle to slide back and forth, bumping the trigger against the shooter's finger and thus mimicking the continuous firing of an automatic weapon. This modification can result in firing rates of up to 800 rounds per minute, significantly increasing the lethality of the firearm. US Supreme Court Lifts Trump-Era Ban The U.S. Supreme Court recently lifted the Trump-era ban on bump stocks, reversing the regulation that had prohibited their possession and sale since 2019. The ban was originally instituted following the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, where the shooter used bump stocks to kill 58 people and injure hundreds more. The Trump administration's ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) reclassified bump...

US Supreme Court lifts ban on gun bump stocks

Image
The U.S. Supreme Court recently lifted the ban on bump stocks, a decision that emerged from a divided court. The ban, which had been in place since 2019, classified bump stocks as machine guns under federal law, thereby making their possession and sale illegal. This change followed the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, where bump stocks were used to devastating effect, prompting the Trump administration to take regulatory action. Several justices voiced different perspectives on the interpretation of the law regarding bump stocks. The central debate hinged on whether bump stocks should be classified as machine guns. Justices like Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh highlighted concerns about the retroactive criminalization of individuals who owned bump stocks legally before the ban. They pointed out that the ATF had previously indicated bump stocks were not machine guns, thus making the sudden regulatory shift problematic for existing owners ( SCOTUSblog ) ( WUSF ) .
